Other things to note
AIRPORTS: We have several options for you to get to the DR. An option close enough with lots of traffic is SDQ (Las Americas Intl) in Santo Domingo. Plenty of flights to a from anywhere in the world to SDQ. From there, it is a 2 hour and 15 minute drive to the Villa. Other options are AZS (El Catey) which is much closer to the house but it is a minimal traffic airport with a few flights per week, some from Europe and most of them from Canada. The drive from AZS to the villa is maybe 35 minutes but then again, unless you have your own airplane, you are better off from SDQ. A last option would be PUJ (Punta Cana) with a lot of traffic as well but the drive is longer to Samana. Maybe something between 3 to 4 hour drive.
DRIVE OR NOT: It all depends on you. We normally recommend clients to rent a nice Jeep or an SUV since it allows you to explore the Samana Peninsula. You can rent from any of these airports. For example, SDQ has just about all the rental car companies you can think of. Typical of any large size airport with plenty of traffic. AZS has only one option; Sixt Car Rental. The road between SDQ and the villa is a wonderful new expressway that takes you from South to North with something like 3 or 4 tolls. You can pay tolls in US or RD pesos. There are ATM machines at the SDQ Airport (also in AZS) if you wanna have local currency. Driving yourself is nice and pretty safe in our opinion. If not desired, there are plenty of taxi services at the SDQ airport that can drive you to the villa. We don't have one in specific we recommend but just about everybody who is a Taxi service and is located in the SDQ Airport will do the job. They normally charge between USD $185 to $225 for that ride. Be sure to coordinate your return if you are to use this type of service and do not wish to rent a car. You can also rent plenty of cars in downtown Las Terrenas. Also available are motorbikes, ATV and other options as well.
DINING: We have a wonderful chef we recommend to many of our clients who wish to have that experience. Omar and Luis are our preferred Chef's. There is no specific pricing as it all depends on many variables like, number of people, number of courses, type of food, allergies, alcohol, no alcohol, etc etc etc. We can tell you that food pricing is very competitive and most of our clients do a mix of Chef service and dining at town centre. So, if you wish to do this, just let us know and we will have the Chef meet with you upon your arrival to discuss this along with your preferences and settle a fun plan for you. We also enjoy a plentiful source of restaurants all along the shoreline from the house to town centre. In particular, la Villa de los Pescadores is one of those places which we recommend quite a lot. Easy to get there. Just follow the shoreline road to town and keep all along the beach.
HOUSEKEEPING: Housekeeping is always included. Nanci is in charge of things. She will take care of you and your group so you don't have to worry about fixing beds and things of that nature. If you feel her services have made a difference, you can always tip her at the end of your trip. She is always very grateful and works hard to make sure you have a wonderful stay. Just look at our reviews. They are about the house and Nanci!!!
DISTANCE: The house is about 2 miles east of the old (closed) El Portillo Airport (runway). Its a sector named La Barbacoa. It is about 5 miles east from downtown Las Terrenas. I have been all over the Samana peninsula and there is no better place to be than in Las Terrenas.
OTHER STUFF: Be sure to use Google Maps in order to figure out distances. Also Trip Advisor helps a lot when you want to figure out an updated list of things to do. There is Zip Line, be sure to go to Cascadas El Limon (ask Nanci about this), and visit near by areas such as Samana and Las Galeras. In Las Galeras (which takes you about 1 hour drive from Las Terrenas) once the road ends, you will bump into the beach. There you will find locals with boats who can coordinate a day beach in secluded areas with or without food. There are several beaches there that the only way to reach them is via a boat. Be sure to explore. You can coordinate this with someone like Excursiones Solis at (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) in Las Galeras. Also close is Los Hiatises National Park, Cabarete, Rio San Juan and other wonderful places. If you go between November and February you might just be one of those lucky ones to see Humpback Whales. About 80% of North American Humpback Whales come to the bay of Samana to give birth between those dates. It quite an spectacle. Plenty of boats in Samana City always available for tourist to enjoy this show of nature.
BEACH: The Peninsula never runs out of sand. Wonderful beaches include those in Las Terrenas, Cosón, Punta Poppy and others. We have a wonderful beach at our residential complex which can be seen in our pic gallery. Its very "private" and shallow. Also, it is secured by the residential complex security team. Its walking distance, maybe a 10 minute walk or you can just drive with your things to the parking area we have there along with your stuff for a day of fun. The drive is through the inner roads of our gated community complex.
SECURITY: Typically, Las Terrenas is a very safe area. For sure, safer than Santo Domingo and many other places in the DR. We are happy to enjoy this lifestyle in Las Terrenas. Nevertheless, even when you believe in God, please always lock your car! But all in all, it is very safe. Our residential complex is gated and has plenty of security. The house also enjoys as part of our staff, a security guard from sunset to sunrise only. His name is Sebastian and he is there to make sure you feel secure always.
